Visited the hippodrome which was the center of Byzantium life for 1000 years and of Ottoman life for another 400 years. At the Northern end of the Hippodrome we saw the stonework fountain called the Kaiser Wilhelm. Presented by the latter to the sultan as a token of friendship in 1901. Next we saw the OBELISK of THEODOSIUS carved in Egypt around of 1500 B.C. It was brought from Egypt to Constantinople in 390 A.D. South is a SPIRAL COLUMN coming out of a hole in the ground. This has been destroyed and the Serpent's heads no longer exist.

At the southern end of the Hippodrome there is a Rough Stone Obelisk. The bronze plates were removed in the 4th century and the team of 4 horses cast in bronze now sit a top the main door to St. Mark's  Church in Venice.

Next we visited the Blue Mosque so called after the Iznik tiles which line the walls. Four massive pillars hold the dome and it was built between 1606 and 1616. The semi domes and domes are painted in graceful arabesques.

Emperor Justinian (527-565 AD) had the church built as an attempt to restore the greatness of the Roman Empire. It was built in 537 AD. and was the greatest church in Christendom until 1453 when the Ottomans defeated Constantinople. Outside are the sunken ruins of Thedosius Church (404-415 AD). Aya Sofya was a church for 1000 years, a mosque until 1935 and until today a museum.

After lunch we visited Topkapi Palace which is a series of pavilions, kitchens, barracks ,audience chambers ,kiosks and sleeping quarters around a central enclosure much like a fortified camp. The kithchens house exhibitions of Chinese porcelain. There are displays of Imperial Robes and the Treasury houses the famous Spoon makers diamond, the golden dagger and relics of Mohommed and Moses. Finally we visited the SPICE BAZAAR famous for its many spice shops. It was built in the 1660's.
